Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh 1930-2024

Sport Ireland would like to extend its sincere sympathies to the family and friends of legendary sports commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who passed away this morning aged 93.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh became synonymous with Gaelic Games over his 60-year broadcasting career.  From 2011 to 2016 he was chairperson of Sport Ireland’s Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership.

Dr Úna May, Sport Ireland CEO, said: “Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh leaves a fantastic legacy as one of Irish sports’ most recognisable voices. He brought games to glorious life for those who couldn’t be at the matches, both on RTÉ Radio and later on TV.

“His turn of phrase and wonderful wit added a tremendous vibrancy to many a sporting event. We’re all the richer for having him keep us company as we enjoyed some great GAA matches.

“At Sport Ireland we want to extend our sympathy to his friends and family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh was born in Dún Síon, just outside Dingle, Co Kerry in 1930, and grew up on the family farm.

His broadcasting journey began back in 1949, when he commentated on a final for Radio Éireann, as it was at the time. This marked the beginning of an illustrious career as a commentator that spanned over 60 years.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh became the voice of the GAA and covered numerous All-Ireland finals in both Irish and English.

Outside of the commentary box he was deeply committed to his community and promoting the Irish language and Gaelic games.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh is survived by his wife Helena and his six children.
