Michael Spain RIP

The death has taken place of Michael Spain, a respected member of the Board of the Irish Sports Council and renowned Co Offaly GAA administrator and referee.

Michael spent a quarter of a century as the Offaly GAA Central Council representative. He also had a distinguished inter-county refereeing career, the highlight of which was taking charge of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final between Kilkenny and Cork in 1972. Michael was inducted into the GAA Hurling Referee's Hall of Fame in 2009.

Michael was an Honorary Vice-President of the Kilcormac/Killoughey Club, having served as Chairman and other positions over the years.

To his wife Maura, his family and his many friends, the Irish Sports Council wishes to convey its sincerest condolences and thank Michael for the wonderful contribution he made to Gaelic Games over the last half century.
