Memorable Day on the Bike Sees Clifford, Dunlevy and McCrystal Strike Gold for Ireland
Eoghan Clifford and tandem pair Katie-George Dunlevy & Eve McCrystal capped a fine day for the Irish on the bike by picking up gold in the C3 Time Trial Road Race and B Tandem respectively at Pontal this evening.
Clifford, who already has a bronze medal in his possession from the C3 Individual Pursuit last week, secured Ireland’s third gold of the Games with a time of 38:21.70.
Hot on the heels of Eoghan’s win, Katie-George Dunlevy and guide Eve McCrystal picked up gold number four as they finished with a time of 38:59.22 on day which saw Ireland claim three medals on the Pontal course.
Sport Ireland Chairman, Kieran Mulvey, was delighted with today’s results in Rio: “What a fantastic day it has been for Ireland’s cyclists picking up no less than three medals in the time trials.
“For Eoghan to recover from a tough race on the track last week to show sheer determination in winning gold today shows just what a strong character he is.
“Katie and Eve have been in fine form of late having won two golds at the World Cup in Ostend in May as well as podium finishes in the UCI Para Cycling Road World Cup in July, and today’s win is very much deserved.
“I would like to congratulate Eoghan, Katie-George and Eve on their terrific achievement on behalf of Sport Ireland, and pay tribute to their backroom teams and all at Cycling Ireland and Paralympics Ireland on a great day for Irish cycling.”
