Meegan through to World Final; Smashes 1500m Irish Record

Andrew Meegan has made the 1500m Freestyle Final at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Meegan continued his record breaking form this morning, following his 400m Freestyle record yesterday, smashing the Irish 1500m Freestyle Record. The 23 year old had held the previous record of 15:38.14 which he set at Ireland's National Swimming Championships in April, his time of 15:25.32 knocked over 12 seconds off that record ensuring the Dubliner a place in the final tomorrow at 4pm(Irish time).

Also at World University Games this morning, Fiona Doyle cruised into the 100m Breaststroke semi-final. Doyle finished second in her heat and fourth overall in 1:08.86, just .6 of a second off her personal best and Irish Record of 1:08.23 set in April this year. The semi-final will take place at 16:36 (Irish time) today.

At the European Junior Swimming Championships in Poznan, Poland, Westport's Dearbhail McNamara swam a new personal best to secure her place in the 200m Breaststroke semi-final. 15 year old McNamara, competing in her first International competition, touched in 2:37.19 to finish 14th overall.

David O'Sullivan of Galway will also contest a semi-final this afternoon following a swim of 2:05.02 in the 200m Butterfly heats.

Brendan Gibbons took over six seconds off his previous best time in the 1500m Freestyle. He clocked 15:52.96 to finish fourth in his heat, placing him fourth overall currently, with the final positioning determined after one more heat this afternoon.

Clodagh Flood (4:32.54 pb), Mary Kate McDowell (4:34.23), Sarah Kelly (4:31.98) and Laoise Fleming (4:35.33 pb) all swam the heats of the 400m Freestyle, whilst Brian O'Sullivan (51.85) was back in action in the 100m Freestyle finishing 2nd in his heat.
