Mayo's Michael Duffy Helps Europe To Win Gold At Youth Olympics In China
Mayo's Michael Duffy was a key part of the European Show Jumping team which won Team Gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in China this morning. Duffy, riding the borrowed horse Commander, jumped two clear rounds to help ensure Europe's win.
The European team consisted of
Filip Agren (SWE)
Matias Alvaro (ITA)
Michael Duffy (IRL)
Lisa Nooren (NED)
Jake Saywell (GBR)
All of the teams competed on borrowed horses that were provided by the organisers and allocated by lot.
Michael will now go on to compete in the individual competition which starts on Saturday.
Ireland won a place on the European team thanks to Bertram Allen's silver medal at last year's European Junior Show Jumping Championships, but he was unable to compete at Nanjing as he is now over age for the youth olympics.
Michael Duffy was selected to take the place by Horse Sport Ireland's Junior High Performance Manager Comdt. John Ledingham who accompanied Michael to Nanjing.
