ISC Family Sports Day - 24 September 2011

15 Sep 2011

The Irish Sports Council has linked with seven Local Sports Partnerships to provide opportunities for families to try out new sports on 24th September.

The Irish Sports Council is inviting you to get involved in sport with your children at five venues across the country on Saturday 24th September. The Irish Sports Council Family Sports Days are being organised by Local Sports Partnerships in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford. The aim of the day is to encourage more families to get involved in playing sport together as a way of keeping fit and healthy. The Council has created the Local Sports Partnership network to provide opportunities for people to participate in sport and physical activity within their own communities at local level.

The first Family Sports Day was run in Athlone in February as part of the Irish Sports Council's association with Operation Transformation, the hit RTE show. The huge interest generated by the show in the work of the Local Sports Partnerships has meant that the concept of Family Sports Days is being rolled out further this September.

At the events, families will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of new and old family friendly sports and activities. Representatives from local clubs and groups will be on hand during the day to offer advice on getting involved in the activities on offer. Activities will be a mixture of team and individual games and will be both outdoor and indoor. Information on other locally available sports will also be available on the day.

John Treacy, the CEO of the Irish Sports Council emphasises how important it is for parents and children to be active: "Our research shows that the majority of adults and children do not get sufficient minutes of physical activity every day to meet the National Physical Activity Guidelines. The aim of the Irish Sports Council Family Sports Days is to make people aware of what's on offer in their local areas and also to experience the fun and enjoyment of sport. I would encourage families in the respective areas to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved."

The Local Sports Partnership network also offers a wide range of training courses to those involved in sport including Basic Awareness courses on the Code of Ethics and runs a number of specific targeted programmes such as Link2BActive.
