ISC and IRFU announce Anti-Doping rule violation

16 Aug 2007

Joint Press Release from the IRFU and the ISC

The Irish Rugby Football Union and the Irish Sports Council jointly announced today that the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel has determined that an amateur rugby player has committed an anti-doping rule violation.

The Panel found that, contrary to Article 2.1 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules, the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolite, cannabis, was found in a sample of the player’s urine collected during in-competition testing towards the end of the 2006-2007 season.

The player involved stood provisionally suspended until the hearing of the Panel. At the hearing, the Panel severely warned and reprimanded the player, but decided not to impose a period of ineligibility. In the particular circumstances of the case, it also directed that the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Irish Sports Council do not publish the name of the player in question.

The process was held under Article 8 (Disciplinary Process) of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules.
