The Irish Sport Council launched a new, free, iPhone App which will allow athletes check all medications against the WADA Prohibited List. The Med Check accesses the Eirpharm Drugs in Sport Database which will indicate if a substance is prohibited, a resource for everyone involved in sport.

The App and a new enhanced website were launched by Minister of State Michael Ring TD at the publication of the 2010 Anti-Doping Annual report. In 2010 the Irish Sports Council conducted 979 tests across 37 sports. 755 urine tests and 65 blood tests were completed under the National Programme and 159 urine tests were conducted under the User Pays Programme.

The testing programme resulted in three rule violations which resulted in sanctions, each one publicly announced in 2010 as required by the Irish Anti-Doping Rules. Of five additional Adverse Analytical Findings¸ two were pending at the end of 2010, two were dealt with by the relevant International Federation and one was resolved through a Retrospective Therapeutic Use Exemption.

The Council completed its first out-of-competition blood testing in 2010 and also conducted testing in competition. In total 65 blood tests were completed in five sports: athletics, swimming, rugby, cycling and Paralympic athletics. With the introduction of blood testing the Council has further developed the biological profiling of athletes by profiling both urine and blood samples.

Of the 755 urine tests conducted under the National Programme, 434 (59%) tests were No- Advance Notice Out-of-competition tests and 321 (41%) tests were completed In Competition. 47 out-of-competition tests were completed overseas by our contracted service provider, the Association of National Ant-Doping Organisations (ANADO).

The Minister for State for Sport, Michael Ring TD, gave his support to the Anti-Doping Programme: "The Irish Sports Council's work in the area of anti-doping is nationally and internationally recognised as being of the highest calibre. It is most important that we continue to ensure that Ireland will remain at the forefront of the international battle against doping; a form of cheating which, if unchecked, could destroy competitive sport".

Professor Brendan Buckley, Chairman of the Anti-Doping Committee said: "I want to highlight the excellent relationships we have with NGBs many of whom are represented here today. We enjoy unanimous support in the Irish sports community and rely on the collaboration of athletes, coaches and many others in fulfilling our mandate".

John Treacy, Chief Executive of the Irish Sports Council, commented: The iPhone App is the latest of our innovative educational resources which we believe will be of enormous practical benefits to athletes who are very aware of the dangers of taking medications before training and competition."
