Ireland competing at Women's World Cup of Golf for first time
IRELAND COMPETING AT WOMEN”S WORLD CUP OF GOLF FOR FIRST TIME
Team Ireland Golf Trust support participation of Rebecca Coakley and Hazel Kavanagh at Sun City event

Ireland will be one of 22 nations participating at the Women’s World Cup of Golf commencing Friday January 19 in South Africa. 44 golfers will compete for national honour and a prize fund of $1.2 million at the Gary Player Country Club, Sun in the North, West Province, South Africa.
Rebecca Coakley (pictured above), based in County Carlow, and Hazel Kavanagh, playing out off the Grange in Rathfarnham, are Ireland’s leading two ladies golf professionals and will be first ever Irish representatives at the event. The Irish team qualified for the tournament on the basis of Rebecca’s strong showing on the 2006 Ladies European Tour.

Rebecca commented before departing for Sun City “It is a great honour to represent Ireland at the World Cup and thanks to the Golf Trust we are able to participate. It is a quality field, with the likes of Laura Davis (Eng) and Julie Inkster (US) competing, but we will give it everything and hope that we produce a high finish.”
The format for the competition is
Friday January 19 Singles (strokeplay)
Saturday January 21 Foursomes (alternate shot)
Sunday January 22 Four ball (better ball)
The winners will be determined by the combined score of each team from all three days.
The Women’s World Cup of Golf commenced in 2005 and is co-sanctioned by the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Ladies European Tour. Sweden are the holders of the prestigious title, with the team of Annika Sorenstam and Liselette Nuemann winning in 2006. Japan won the inaugural event in 2005.

Team Ireland Golf Trust, which is administered by the Irish Sport Council, aims to contribute to an increase in the presence of Irish golf professionals on the various international tours. Since it was established in 2000 it has provided more than €1.5 million financial support to golfers to date. The Trust is a partnership between state agencies, private companies and the various golf organisations.
