Ireland 1 (1) Belgium 1 (1)

23 Mar 2012

Ireland took on Belgium tonight in their final pool game in a match that qualification wise was redundant as both had already qualified for the final this Sunday, the winner of which will earn a place at the London 2012 Olympics (the final will be broadcast live by RTE 1 from 3.20 this Sunday Irish Time).

Ireland was lead out tonight by Sinead McCarthy who earned her 50th cap in a match that saw both sides 1 a piece at full time. Ireland got the first real chance seven minutes in when Michelle Harvey dragged the set piece but the Belgian first runner blocked down the attempt. Just 2 minutes later it was the home side who took the lead when a penalty corner was turned into a stroke and Boon made no mistake giving Belgium the 1-0 lead. Belgium continued with a couple of further chances but they were well dealt with by the girls in green.

Seven minutes from the end of the first half Chloe Watkins levelled for Ireland tapping in after some great work by Emma Smyth and Miriam Crowley. Both sides had chances before half time but the sides remained level as the whistle blew.

Belgium went close early in the second half but the post denied Raes shot. Belgium went on to secure another couple of penalty corners but a calm Irish defence dealt well with any threat. Both sides continued to play in a cat and mouse type fashion reluctant to show too much of their hands before Sunday's final, but Ireland had one last chances as Crowley secured Ireland a penalty corner on the hooter but Sargent's effort was saved and so both the sides will go head to head again in the one that counts in two days time.

Commenting after the match Coach Gene Muller said "We were fortunate to tie tha match as Belgium had most of the possession. It was a difficult match given the emotional high of the win against Spain last night."
