The Institute of Sport is delighted announce details of its next high performance coach education event which takes place on October 13th - 14th in the Garda College, Templemore, Co. Tipperary. The event which is the third and final high performance coach education event in 2011, is part of a series of high performance coach education activities delivered through the Institute of Sport's high performance coach education programme entitled 'The Pursuit of Excellence Programme'. In total 20 coaches from 10 sports participate on the programme which delivers individualized learning and development support to some of Ireland's top high performance coaches. The theme for the upcoming event will focus on the critical issues relating to the athlete coach relationship.
'The upcoming Pursuit of Excellence event is a pilot initiative which marks the beginning of a very exciting collaboration that we have developed with An Garda Sيochلna. Having visited their world class training college on a number of occasions and observed their leading edge approach towards training and development, we are truly honoured to access their community of excellence. I would like to extend my thanks to Chief Superintendent Ann Marie McMahon, who is the Director of Training & Development in An Garda Sيochلna for providing us with this exciting and unique opportunity', stated Gary Keegan, Director of the Institute of Sport.
The programme of activities for the 2 day event will include a joint delivery between the Institute of Sport coach education team and top training practitioners from An Garda Sيochلna. The event will address the following learning and development objectives:
- Introduce a problem based learning approach towards high performance coach education
- Create an understanding of how coaches profile athletes and how this information can beintegrated into the design and implementation of a coaching programme.
- Showcase the learning components and challenges of an coach-athlete relationship
- Develop applied practical solutions for dealing with potential athlete conflict situations
- Disseminate key learning arising from IIS PEP team learning project
Central to this collaboration will be the use of problem based learning as an approach to facilitate applied coach learning and development. This will involve the use of Garda trainers to role play critical situations that simulate applied athlete coach scenarios. Coaches in attendance will have an opportunity to test their coaching skills in a range of applied coach athlete situations and receive video feedback.
In addition to the applied training activities, coaches will also get an opportunity to hear from Chris Jones who is the performance director with Triathlon Ireland. Chris will present his approach towards athlete profiling and his views on the core tenants of a positive athlete coach relationship. Top rugby international Gerry Flannery will also be participating in the event and he will be offering his athlete view on the core elements of a successful athlete coach relationship.
