McCarthy seeks further glory at Duke of York Trophy

Julie McCarthy (Forrest Little) will compete in the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy at Royal Birkdale Golf Club between Tuesday 13th and Thursday 15th September in the 54 hole mixed stroke play tournament.

The tournament welcomes some of the best male and female golfers from around the world, who are either current holders of their National Under 18 Championship or have won another major golfing event.  McCarthy had an outstanding year at U18 level, having been crowned Irish Girls Close Champion and adding the Ulster, Leinster and Connacht Girls’ Championships to her portfolio. She was also a member of the victorious Girls’ Home International Team.

The Duke of York Trophy has been run over the last 15 years and is now widely regarded as one of the top events in the International junior calendar. Previous winners and successful competitors include Rory McIlroy, Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and England’s Melissa Reid.

Last year’s tournament saw 57 junior champions compete and the event counts towards the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Click HERE for further information on the Tournament.

Senior Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship

Caldy Golf Club

14th – 16th September 2016

Strong Irish pack prepare for British Senior Open Challenge

95 players have entered the Senior Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship taking place next week at Caldy Golf Club, England. Ireland will have an eight person contingent travelling to the Championship, including three of the victorious Irish Senior European Team, Sheena McElroy (Grange), Gertie McMullen (The Island) and Laura Webb (East Berkshire) and Team Captain Pauline Walsh (Headfort).  Pat Doran (Donabate), Kate Evans (Royal County Down Ladies), Marilyn Henderson (Royal Belfast) and Mary MacLaren (Wellingborough) will also travel with the hope of success.

Hoping to go one better than last year will be Irish Senior Close Champion Gertie McMullen. McMullen finished in second place at the 2015 event, three shots behind eventual winner Julie Brown (England). Brown will return this year, in defence of her title.  Webb and McElroy carded top ten finishes in the 2015 tournament and will be hoping for similar results this time around.

Caldy Golf Club was designed by five times Open Champion James Braid and it provides a mix of cliff-top links, parkland and heathland, almost 3 courses in one.
