ILGU - Irish U16’s set for English Encounter
ILGU: Six Irish players will tee it up at the English Girls’ U16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship this week at the Nottinghamshire Golf Club. The Championship shall consist of two 18 hole stroke play qualifying rounds played on Tuesday and Wednesday. The leading 36 players plus ties shall qualify for the 36 hole stroke play final played on Thursday.
There is a very strong Irish contingent this year, with all the girls peaking at different stages throughout the season. Sara Byrne (Douglas) reached the final of the Irish Girls’ Plate Championship. Georgia Carr (Milltown) had an impressive Irish Ladies Close Championship as she reached the quarter finals after seeing off some tough competitors. Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden) has performed consistently throughout the year and will be representing Ireland at U18 level at the Home International Matches in Conwy from 3-5 August. Anna Foster (Elm Park) was a member of the victorious Leinster girls’ team, alongside Carr and Walsh at the Interprovincial matches at Slieve Russell earlier this month. Emma Forbes (Royal Portrush) was a member of the Ulster Girls’ Interprovincial team and last but not least, Kate Lanigan (Hermitage) impressed at the Irish Girls’ Close Championship.
Gillian O’Leary will accompany the team as manager and PGA Professional Michelle Carroll will travel as coach.
