Hockey: Ireland Earn 2-0 Victory Over Scotland
The final match of the series saw the Green Army earn the victory that had eluded them in the opening 2 fixtures. The ever reliable defensive unit of McCay and Sargent, ably joined by the newly-capped Tice, swept up any early pressure. The 15th minute saw Evans score on the reverse and the Irish increased the tempo with efforts from Beatty, Carroll and Brown all going close to adding a second goal. Mullan, captaining the squad for the day, linked up well with her UCD team mate Pinder to win the 3rd PC of the half for the Irish but a second goal evaded the girls in green as Frazer's flick was well saved. HT 0-1 Ireland
An early second half Irish goal was disallowed for dangerous height but the momentum from the first half remained with the Green Army as two shots were cleared off the line by the Scottish defence. Brown and Carroll again got themselves in scoring positions but it was the composure of Beatty that saw Ireland stretch to 2-0. Ireland punished Scotland on the counter and Beatty, 1 on 1 with Cochrane, slotted the ball calmly into the bottom corner. The game simmered out with several further chances for Ireland but the final score stood at 2-0.
Speaking after the match Coach Graham Shaw said "We were happy with the series. The team responded very well to the changes we made. We created a lot of opportunities and should have scored more goals that we did, but that will come with time together and more game experience".
