Get Ireland Walking

11 Dec 2013

The Get Ireland Walking Initiative is today adopting a partnership approach in order to maximise the number of people walking for health, wellbeing and fitness throughout Ireland. Walking offers an opportunity for people who are inactive or have low levels of physical activity to get active. While over 60% of adults in Ireland are walking weekly, only 10% of existing walkers are currently meeting the National Physical Activity Guidelines.

The agencies committing to the agreement are as follows:

- Irish Sports Council
- Health Service Executive (HSE)
- Mountaineering Ireland
- Irish Heart Foundation
- Arthritis Ireland
- Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA)
- Age and Opportunity
- Ireland Active

The Initiative is supporting individuals and communities to get walking through the provision of:

- Information, advice and guidance about walking
- Resources to support the setup and development of walking groups
- Free insurance cover for volunteer walk leaders and group coordinators
- Database of walking groups
- Signposting service to local groups and agencies/organisations active in the promotion of walking.
