Galway in Search of First Division 1 League Title
Galway have been one of the powerhouses of Ladies Football over the last five years but despite their successes the Tribeswomen have not managed to claim the Division 1 National League title.
Galway contested the first ever Ladies National Football League Division 1 final in 1979 but lost out to Tipperary and their only other appearance in a Division 1 final came more recently in 2005 where they were beaten by Cork.
This Sunday Galway take on neighbours Mayo at Hyde Park for the Suzuki National Football League Division 1 crown and they feel their time has come following a comprehensive 11 point victory over Mayo in the preliminary rounds of the Championship last weekend.
Mayo are in search of their third National League Division 1 title having won the competition in 2000 and 2004 and captain Christina Heffernan is hoping that her team can quickly rediscover the form that ended Cork’s two year unbeaten run.
“I think the Cork game took a lot out of us, but we are not looking for excuses. Galway were very good last weekend and were first to every ball. We have not become a bad team overnight so hopefully we can’t all play badly two weeks in a row,” said Heffernan.
Dublin face Wexford in the Division 2 final in Thurles on Saturday as a curtain raiser to the U21 Men’s Football final. The Jackies are favourites to win after a much improved season under new manager Gerry McGill while Westmeath take on Fermanagh in Hyde Park on Sunday for the Division 3 title.
