First senior title for Sara Boyle

02 Sep 2013

Leinster player Sara Boyle took her first senior title in some style at the Mount Pleasant Open in Dublin this weekend. The unseeded Boyle caused the shock of the tournament when she dumped out top seed Jennie King in the quarter-finals of the women's singles. She went on to beat Petra Rosolova in the semi-finals and in a thrilling final, edged out junior international player Rachael Darragh 22-20, 10-21, 21-19 for the title.

In the men's singles final, No 1 seed Tony Stephenson from Ulster had a comfortable win against the unseeded David Walsh from Connacht. Stephenson's toughest match came in the semi-finals where he came from behind to beat Leinster player Nigel Boyne 15-21, 21-12, 21-16. Walsh had progressed to the final after beating South Africa player Prakash Nath and No 2 seed Liam O'Leary in the quarter and semi-finals.

Stephenson and Tony Murphy were top seeds for the men's doubles and in the final, were pushed hard in the early stages by Leinster pair Daniel Magee and Niall Tierney before closing out the match at 25-23, 18-21, 21-9. In an all-Leinster women's doubles decider, Leinster's Fiona Glennon and Jennie King, the No 2 seeds, beat top seeds Caroline O'Sullivan and Grace Webster in straight sets. King and Tony Murphy both collected a second title in the mixed doubles, beating Daniel Magee and Fiona Glennon in a final that went to three sets.Great credit must go to Siobhan Grehan and her team for the success of the event and to the team of umpires led by referee Aengus Sheerin for their professional job at all events.
