Ellen Keane wraps-up successful day for Ireland with bronze in the pool

14 Sep 2016

Ellen Keane produced a great swim to secure bronze, and Ireland’s fourth medal of the day, in the SB8 100m Breaststroke in Rio tonight.

Keane, who although only 21 years of age is competing in her third Paralympic Games, recorded a time of 1:23.07 finishing behind Canada's Katarina Roxon and Claire Cashmore of Britain in what was a tough race.

Commenting on Ellen’s medal win, Sport Ireland Chairman, Kieran Mulvey, said: “Ellen’s medal win tonight is thoroughly deserved. From when she first appeared at a Paralympic Games at the age of just 13 in Beijing where she finished sixth in this discipline, Ellen has shown real progression and is a three-time world bronze medallist.

“On behalf of Sport Ireland, I would like to congratulate Ellen, her coaches, all at Paralympics Ireland and the National Aquatic Centre where she trains on her achievement and rounding-up a fantastic day for Irish sport.”
