Economic Impact of Sport in Ireland

The Irish Sports Council has recently appointed Indecon International Economic Consultants to carry out an assessment of the economic impact of sport in Ireland. The study will examine areas such as consumer expenditure on sport, numbers employed in sport in a full-time and part-time capacity, an estimate of the economic value of volunteering and the number of volunteers in sport, an estimate of the total value added by sport to Ireland and a comparison of the contribution that sport makes to Ireland's economy with that of other countries. The study will look at both direct sports activities as well as economic activity on related items such as sports media, sports tourism, etc., will allow comparability with studies from other countries and, where possible, with previous Irish research. The aim is to have a final report completed by end September 2010 in order to inform the Government's deliberations on funding sport for 2011 and beyond.

The Council now invites interested parties to submit views or information which they feel might be relevant to the study. All such material should be submitted in writing to Peter Smyth, Director of Research, Irish Sports Council, Top Floor, Block A, West End Office Park, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15.

The deadline for receipt of submissions is 31 July 2010
