Doherty wins XC Champs

16 Dec 2013

National Junior Squad athlete Con Doherty claimed the U19 Woodie’s DIY
Novice cross country championship title in Waterford over the weekend thanks to
a strong run over the 6 kilometre course.

The course at Waterford IT provided a tough challenge for all the
athletes competing at the Woodie’s DIY Novice and Uneven age group cross
country championships on Sunday. Officials had to endure the toughest
weather when setting up the course yesterday, but thankfully the weather
was a bit kinder come Sunday.

Doherty running for Westport AC managed to pull ahead of Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea AC in the final stages with Brendan O'Connor 3rd.

Youth Development Squad athlete Niamh Corry had a great run to finish 8th in the 4km girls U17 race while fellow squad member Emma Watson finished in 20th. Darren Dunne running for Nenagh AC and a new member of the Junior Development Squad finished a fine 18th in the competitive 5km boys U17 race.

National Duathlon Champion, Cathal O’Donovan (St. Finbarr’s AC) set a strong pace from the start
of the men’s novice race and was not overtaken until the last lap when
Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC) took over the lead. He didn’t have things all
his own way though as he had to overcome a very strong challenge from
Andrew Connick (Ferrybank AC) before crossing the line to win his second
national title in the space of a month, with a fine ninth place finish
in the European junior championships last Sunday. O’Donovan held on for
third.
