CYCLING Fast track your way to 2012

Track cyclist David O'Loughlin was today in Dublin to help launch an exciting new track cycling talent transfer programme. David was lending his support to Cycling Ireland, Sport Northern Ireland and the Irish Sports Council who are looking for talented athletes to try out for their new Route 2012 Talent Transfer Programme.

This programme will identify and develop talented male and female track cyclists in preparation for high performance level competition, and potentially the 2012 Olympic Games.

David has just returned from the Beijing Olympics where he finished 11th in the Men's Individual Pursuit. Speaking at the launch David said: "Track cycling is exciting, explosive, fast and provides the ultimate mental and physical challenge. The Route 2012 Talent Transfer Programme is a unique opportunity for athletes currently involved in other sports at an international/national level who may have transferable skills to try this exhilarating sport and be part of a supported training and competition structure."

Geoff Liffey Chief Executive Cycling Ireland spoke of his excitement of the new initiative: "Route 2012 will attract new athletes providing a fresh stimulus and a challenge to our existing athletes as they develop towards their next set of targets. We are delighted to have the full backing of both sports councils in helping us provide a full support network backed with the necessary expertise."

Sport Northern Ireland Chair Dominic Walsh added: "As the lead agency for developing sport in Northern Ireland we are delighted to be involved in the programme. For success at international level we need to put in place the right systems to identify talent and support athletes. This programme will provide high quality coaching, training facilities, sports science support and appropriate competition opportunities enabling athletes to realise their full potential and achieve sporting success."

John Treacy Chief Executive of the Irish Sports Council commented: "Our support for David O'Loughlin over the past couple of years has demonstrated that there is real performance potential for Ireland in the sport of track cycling. This new programme can bring talent into the sport and open up new opportunities for Irish athletes."

Applicants who match the criteria will undertake testing which will give an indication of their potential to become an elite track cyclist.
