09 Jun 2009

Here we go again. Ireland is on another World Cup adventure after a stunning six wickets victory over Bangladesh in Trent Bridge Nottingham yesterday. The Irish Sports Council conveyed its congratulations immediately after the game and is delighted to be able to support the Irish Cricket Team.

Ireland's victory guaranteed a place in the Super Eights of the ICC World Twenty20 irrespective of their 2nd game against current World Champions tomorrow.

Ireland's wonderful team victory was spearheaded by former captain Trent Johnston's excellent bowling and the O'Brien brothers' explosive batting. Johnston took 3 for 20 in his four over bowling spell. Ably supported by his fellow bowlers, Bangladesh were restricted to 137 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Following a sluggish start, 8 for 1, after 3 overs, Ireland recovered to overhaul the Bangladesh total with 10 balls to spare. Man of the match, Niall O'Brien, injured during the Bangladesh innings, valiantly batted to score 40 runs from 25 deliveries, including 3 sixes. Younger brother followed Niall's example by plundering 39 runs from only 17 deliveries, including 2 sixes and 4 fours. These great efforts ensured a comfortable six wicket victory in the end to the delight of the travelling " Blarney Army".

Ireland's will open the Super Eight's on Thursday in Trent Bridge against New Zealand at 13.30.
