Sports Inclusion Development Officers

Competitive Process to Select 19 New Officers around Ireland

The Irish Sports Council is rolling out an exciting new initiative which will create many opportunities in sport for people with a disability and add significantly to the country’s sporting infrastructure.

Funding has been secured from the Dormant Accounts Fund to employ a network of 19 Sports Inclusion Development Officers, employed and supported by the Local Sports Partnerships, working mainly on a full basis over a two year period. The Council hopes all the new Officers will be in place by January 2008.

Specifically the Sports Inclusion Development Officers will be charged with promoting participation by people with a disability in sport and physical activity and with ensuring local resources are being used to maximum potential.

The Irish Sports Council has recently announced funding to support the Centre for Adapted Physical Activity based in the Institute of Technology Tralee. The intention is that this Centre would provide the leadership, support and coordination necessary for the local network of Sports Inclusion Development Officers.

Research by the National Disability Authority highlights five main factors essential for improvements in participation rates among people with disabilities in Ireland. These factors, namely stronger leadership, improved facilities, the provision of adequate experience in the school and community, accessible information and training & coaching programmes, will be addressed by the new network of dedicated officers.

These 19 posts have been advertised in the national and local press.

Details are as follows;

The salary for these posts will be €40,607; based on the equivalent Local Authority Grade 5.

Prospective applicants should apply directly to the addresses below for the area(s) of their choice. The closing date for receipt of applications is 4pm Friday 2nd November 2007.
