Classy Holland brush Ireland aside

A though day at the office saw Ireland fall to a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Dutch in the second match of their Electric Ireland EuroHockey Youth Championship campaign.

Richie Malone's side were well beaten against a classy Holland side who moved the ball with pace and precision, but he will be disappointed to see his side concede so many penalty corners against top quality opposition.

Indeed, Irish goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran was called into action on numerous occasions throughout the game and was undoubtedly the player of the match.

After missed opportunities Holland broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Matla's drag flick found the bottom corner. The lead was doubled after incessant Dutch pressure led to Van Ramshorst slotting home. Half time, Ireland 0 Holland 2.

The second half began much the same as the first and Zerbo slotted home two goals in quick succession, one a goalmouth scramble from a penalty corner and second an easy finish after poor Irish marking.

At 4-0 Ireland made some costly errors and were unable to make the most of what little chances they made. Kernohan and Thom found themselves 2v1 with the Dutch goalkeeper but Thom's pass went over the backline.

Holland added two more goals to their tally as time petered out, Slinkert with a classy double as a fatigued Irish side ran out of gas. With France beating Wales 2-0 in the early game of the day, Ireland can now look forward to a winner takes all game vs France on Thursday.
