British Lead Tattersals Three Star After Cross Country But Irish Take Half of Top Ten

03 Jun 2012

British Olympian William Fox-Pitt led the field in the CCI three-star class at Tattersalls Three Day Event this evening (Saturday), but Irish riders claimed five of the top ten spots.

Fox-Pitt and Bay My Hero picked up just 2.4 time penalties on the Co. Meath cross country course to finish on a penalty score of 44, a respectable distance from fellow-British runner-up Polly Stockton and Westwood Mariner, who recorded 51.2 penalties.

However, Ireland's Sarah Ennis with the Irish Sport Horse Sugar Brown Babe was less than one point behind Stockton in third place on 52 penalties, while Tipperary's Peter Hannigan and First Mate placed fourth on the same penalty score.

Britain's Ruth Edge, who had been Friday's overnight leader with Rogersdale, dropped to fifth this evening after time penalties on the cross country phase, while Capt. Geoff Curran and the Irish Sport Horse Shanaclough Crecora incurred zero penalties today to take sixth place.

Other Irish riders in the top ten were Austin O'Connor and Ringwood Mississippi in eighth and Jim Newsam with the Irish Sport Horse Magennis in tenth.

The Three Day Event concludes at Tattersalls tomorrow (Sunday) with the show jumping phase.
