Boyne Takes Munster Title
It was an emotional Nigel Boyne who took the men's singles title at the Munster Open in University of Limerick yesterday after a closely fought three game match with Eddie Cousins. Nigel was impressive throughout the morning with victories against Norman Lau and Mark Brady along the way to reach the final.
In the women's singles Ruth Kilkenny showed she is still on top on her game after her retirement from the International circuit. In the final Ruth played Lucie Corcoran, and took the title 21-16 21-13.
In the men's doubles, Eddie Cousins/Nicholas Murphy were the steadier combination of the day, and in the final beat Mark Brady/Satchal Madden 21-11 21-18. Brady/Madden had to fight off a tough challenge in the semi-final where they beat Jack O'Brien/Ben Gallagher Lynch 25-23 in the third and final game!
In the women's doubles, the Munster pairing of Ciara O'Connor/Gemma Tobin took the title against Lucie Corcoran/Crona Rooney 21-16 15-21 21-16.
In the mixed doubles final, Laura Hennessy/John Amond were up against Crona Rooney/Mark Brady. Another three game final with the title going to Rooney/Brady 14-21 21-19 21-17.
The Munster Open is part of a new four Province circuit, with the Connacht Open next in October.
