BOXING World Championships Results Day Nine

John Joe Nevin secured Ireland's sixth medal at World Championships level following a 7-5 quarter final win over Chinese bantamweight Yu Gu at the Mediolanum Forum in Milam today.

Gu was 1-0 up at the end of the first round but received a public warning for not boxing in the second. and Nevin, who represented Ireland at last years Olympics, forged ahead 4-2.

Both boxers exchanged scores in the third and final round but it was Nevin that prevailed to guarantee himself at least bronze.

The 20 year old Irish senior champion, who will now meet Eduard Abzalimovof Russia in Friday's 54Kg semi finals, admitted to the AIBA wensite that it was a tense going down the final stretch.

"I became a little nervous at that point, I cast a glance to my coaches and they gestured to me to keep my patience. I did, waiting for the occasion which finally came, and I was able to score, " he said

"John is an exceptional talent, capable of accomplishing anything he wants," Jim Moore added. "He is astonishingly mature for his age, and he showed today again that he has the heart of a lion."


But while Nevin was celebrating today, Ken Egan and Willie McLaughlin both bowed out of the tournament at the quarter final stage.

Egan, a silver medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, was beaten 17-9 by French light heavyweight Abdelkader Bouhenia.

And courageous Donegal welterweight McLaughlin lost out 16-7 to Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia.

Thursday is a rest day at the Championships, the 15th edition of the series since 1974.
