BOXING World Championships Results Day Eight

08 Sep 2009

There was double disappointment for Ireland tonight after middleweight Darren O'Neill was beaten 7-3 by Armenian, Andranik Hakoyban in Milan.

Hakoyban took a 2-1 lead into the second round of this last 16 encounter and was 4-3 in front at the end of a very tactical second frame.

With O'Neill chasing the fight in the third Hakobyan picked off another three points to book his ticket into the quarter finals

Earlier this evening flyweight Declan Geraghty lost out 17-7 to Tugstogt Nyambayar of Mongolia.

Geraghty, the youngest member of the Irish squad at 19, was seeking to become the second Dublin southpaw to reach thelast eight after Ken Egan and was 3-2 up at the end of the first.

The Irish senior champion stretched that lead to 4-2 early in the second but Nyambayar came storming back to force Geraghty into a standing eight count and command a 9-4 advantage going into the third and final round.

Ken Egan, Willie McLaughlin and John Joe Nevin will be in the ring tomorrow boxing for at least a bronze medal apiece at the Mediolanum Forum.
