BOXING Triple Disappointment for Irish Boxers at the Czech Republic Multi Nations

18 May 2009

There was triple disappointment for Irish boxers at the Czech Republic Multi Nations tonight after Eric Donovan, Philip Sutcliffe and Con Sheehan lost out in Usti Nad Labem.

Donovan, the reigning Irish lightweight (60Kg) champion, was beaten 6-0 by World featherweight (57Kg) champion, Albert Selimov of Russia.

And Sutcliffe lost to 3-0 to Czech Republic light welterweight Zdenek Chadek.

Sheehan was beaten 3-2 on a count-back by Armenian, Tsoliak Ananikyan despite dominating the final round.

Tonight's results, combined with semi final placings from Carl Frampton and Declan Geraghty, mean that Ireland will be taking home three silver and two bronze medals from the 18 nation tournament.

Commentating on this evenings finals, Irish head coach Billy Walsh said that their objective had been achieved - but admitted that they was disappointed not to have taken home at least one gold.

He said: "I thought Con landed three clean right hands in the last round of his final but he didn't get the scores, Con, Eric and Philip, who was competing for the first time at senior international level, boxed very well and gave it everything they had."

"We were looking to get as much competition under out belts as possible out here ahead of next months European UnionChampionships in Denmark.

"We certainly achieved our objective in that respect as we got some quality bouts under our belts, although we are disappointed we did not win gold. We will go home now and re-build for Denmark."
