BOXING Kenneth Egan Wins Gold At EU Boxing Championships In Sardinia
23 year Neilstown boxer wins gold in Light Heavyweight (81 kg) category
Kenneth Egan produced the best performance of his career to beat European Silver Medalist Mario Sivolija in the final of EU Boxing Championships in Sardinia this afternoon (June 10).
Down 5 points after the first round, he produced an excellent second round to take the lead, which he never relinquished to win 48 points to 37.
After the fight Kenneth commented: “I am delighted with the win. I picked my shots from round 2 and showed great form and fitness to beat a top fighter.
The Gold Medal is a great boost. After a break I will focus on preparations for the Worlds in China in November”.
Kenneth Egan has twice reached the quarterfinals of the World Championships. In 2005, as well as his National Championships, he has won Gold Medals at the Multi-nations Tournament in Finland the Four Nations Tournament in Liverpool.
Gary Keegan, IABA Performance Director: “Kenneth is now delivering on his huge potential. At 23 he is still young for a light heavyweight. His four performances this week have shown real class, consistency and the benefits of intense physical preparation. He had to beat two Athens Olympians to win Gold and produced a series of outstanding fights to come out on top of a very competitive division. His target now will be the World Championships in China in November”.
The EU Championships is a relatively new event that has established itself as the second most important tournament in Europe.
