However, boxing will not start until tomorrow (June 5th) following the weigh-in and draw.Ireland will be using a nine-man squad in Moscow, and head-coach Billy Walsh, who reached the quarter finals of the 1989 World Championships in the Russian city, said the squad were eager to get the show on the road.

"We'll have one light training session today and then our focus will turn to Saturday's weigh-in and draw. The squad are in great spirits. They have been through two tough training camps over the last month or so and they've got a lot of work done and are eager to get in the ring and get some bouts under their belts."

Ken Egan, meanwhile, is expressing quite confidence that Ireland can make an impression against the cream of European amateur boxing. "We have a lot of experience in the squad mixed with some top class younger boxers. The European Senior Championships is always very competitive and we'll be coming up against some of the best in the world in Moscow.

"It's going to be tough and we'll have to be at our best, but we've been competing and winning at the top level over the last number of years and if we perform the way are capable of performing I would be confident that we will do well."
