Boxing EU Women's Championships

An eight-strong Irish squad has been named for the 2011 European Union Women's Championships which begin in Katowice, Poland on Sunday. World and European lightweight champion Katie Taylor is included in the panel and will be aiming for her fourth EU gold on the trot.


The experienced Sinead Kavanagh and Kelly Harrington will wear the Irish middleweight and light-welterweight vests, while Waterford's Lynne McInerney competes at light-flyweight. Taylor's Bray BC team-mate Laoise Traynor trades leather at welterweight and Ciara Smith and Dervla Duffy will be vying for podium positions in the flyweight and featherweight class.


Kilkenny's Laura O'Neill will represent Ireland at light-heavyweight in Katowice. Irish coach Peter Taylor says they are anticipating a very competitive tournament. "Nothing will come easy in Poland and we're expecting a tough Championships. We have a lot of experience in the team and I would be confident that they can do well in Katowice. The European Union Championships will be another big tournament for the Irish squad and they're all looking forward to the challenge."
