BOXING AIBA World Youth Championships

Joe Ward, Chris Blaney and Chris Phelan all advanced at today's AIBA World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan.

But Kieran Forde, who was 3-2 up in the final round, bowed out on a count-back after finishing level at 3-3 with Zura Mekerishvili of Georgia.

Ward, the current AIBA World junior champion, stopped Albanian middleweight Bekim Vjerdha in round two.

The Moate BC Co. Westmeath club-man, who was 18-1 ahead when the bout was halted, will now meet Cuba's Frankie Sanchez for a place in the quarter final on Thursday in a match-up which is already being touted as a potential contender for the tie of the last 16 phase.

Blaney, meanwhile, chalked up his second win in 48 hours courtesy of a 6-1 verdict over Mina Rojas of Ecuador and Phelan earned an impressive 5-1 decision over Arios Aguero of the Dominican Republic.

Blaney will also be vying for a place in the quarter finals on Thursday, versus Dongjin Lee of Korea.

Phelan, Ryan Burnett and Michael O'Reilly will be involved in last 32 bouts tomorrow against the host nation, Italy and Cuba.

The 2010 AIBA World Youth Championships are acting as the only qualifier for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August.

Boxers reaching the semi finals in Baku will guarantee themselves at least a bronze medal and book their tickets for Singapore.
