BOXING AIBA World Championships Homecoming

15 Sep 2009

The Irish World Championships squad are due to arrive home from Milan (Aer Lingus flight) via Dublin Airport at approximately 1pm tomorrow.

All media are invited to attend tomorrows homecoming.

Irish bantamweight John Joe Nevin claimed a bronze medal at the Champions, Ireland's sixth at this level since the inaugural World Championships in Havana, Cuba in 1974.

The final bell of the 15th edition of the AIBA World Senior Championships tolled at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan this afternoon.

Hosts Italy and Russia claimed double gold as Dominico Valentino and Olympic champion Robert Cammerelle sent the home crowd into raptures with top of the podium finishes in the lightweight and super heavyweight categories.

Cammerelle, who won gold at the 2007 European Union Championships in Dublin, was also presented with the best boxer award, as chosen by the media.

Mongolia meanwhile, won its first gold at this level courtesy of Serdamba Purevdorji's 10-5 win over David Ayrapetyan of Russia.

Flyweight McWilliams Arroyo bridged a 35 year gap since Puerto Rico last won WC gold with the biggest victory of the day, an 18-2 verdict over Tugstsogt Nyambayar, a decision which denied the Mongolians their second win on the bounce.

There were wins also for Detelin Dalakiev of Bulgaria, who John Joe Nevin beat in last years Olympic qualifiers, and Raniel Iglesia Sotolongo of Cuba, who out-pointed 17 year old Frankie Gomez - the youngest boxer in the finals - of the USA 8-2.

German welterweight Jack Keth-Culcay produced one of the upsets of the afternoon with a 7-4 win over Andrey Zamkovoy of Russia, while Uzbekistani middleweight Abbos Atoev was far too strong for Armenia's Andranik Hakoyban, winning 9-0.

Arthur Beterbiev and Egor Mekhontsev resurrected Russian fortunes following four straight losses with a double gold strike in the light heavyweight and heavyweight categories.
