Barriers - Potential Solutions

24 Jun 2011

People don’t have the time to give, volunteering takes up too much time

  • Review volunteer roles and assess whether certain tasks could be split into more than one role or done on a rota basis?
  • Agree a minimum length of time for people to volunteer, for example 6 months.

Lack of confidence

  • Ensure that volunteers are given appropriate support from more experienced members of the club. Encourage mentoring within the club but be careful that you do not overload these mentors either. Develop a succession planning strategy within the club.
  • Try to provide timely and appropriate training and induction for volunteers.

Too many demands on the volunteer/too many jobs to do

  • Review volunteer tasks, have clear job descriptions with details of time commitment needed.
  • Consider breaking the tasks into more than one role.
  • Have a recruitment drive to increase your volunteer team.

Lack of volunteer management/appreciation from the club

  • Agree who will be responsible for volunteer support and coordination
  • Give volunteers positive feedback and thank them.  All staff should be aware of this.
  • Ensure that volunteers have a person (s) they can go to for advice, opportunities to engage with others, to learn new skills, and get feedback and recognition.

Lack of awareness about volunteering opportunities

  • Publicize and promote volunteering opportunities.
  • Contact Volunteering Ireland and register your volunteering opportunities with them.
