22 Apr 2008

IRELAND’S SCOTT EVANS, WHO IS SUPPORTED BY THE IRISH SPORTS COUNCIL, REACHED THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAYED IN HERNING, DENMARK OVER THE WEEKEND.

THIS WAS A FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE YOUNG 20 YEAR OLD AS NEVER BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF BADMINTON IN IRELAND HAS AN IRISH PLAYER REACHED THIS STAGE OF THIS HIGH PROFILE CHAMPIONSHIP.

ON ROUTE SCOTT BEAT SVEN ERIC KASTENS FROM GERMANY IN TWO SETS FOLLOWED BY TOP RUSSIAN STANISLAV PUKHOV IN A FIERCELY FOUGHT THREE SET MATCH.

AT THE QUARTER FINAL STAGE SCOTT MET THE EVENTUAL WINNER AND NUMBER ONE SEED KENNETH JONASSEN OF DENMARK BUT THIS FINISH SHOULD ENSURE A NEW WORLD RANKING FOR SCOTT IN THE LOW 40’S WHICH WILL BE HIS BEST RANKING TO DATE AND WILL GO A LONG WAY TO SECURING THE OYLMPIC SPOT HE IS CHASING. QUALIFICATION PLACES WILL BE FINALISED AT THE BEGINNING OF MAY BASED ON WORLD RANKINGS.

WITH SUPPORT UNDER THE IRISH SPORTS COUNCIL’S PERFORMANCE PLANNING PROGRAMME SCOTT IS BASED IN DENMARK ON A FULL TIME BASIS UNDER HIS COACH, FORMER WORLD CHAMPION JIM LAUGESEN AT THE GENTOFTE BADMINTON CLUB.
