ATHLETICS Irish Medals at UK Indoors

11 Feb 2008

Irish athletes Kelly Proper and Ailis McSweeney had podium finishes at the UK Indoor Championships in Sheffield over the weekend.

Kelly Proper only managed one legal jump in the long-jump final. However, this jump was good enough for the silver medal. Her 6.31 m jump was just 1cm outside her Irish record set last weekend in Cardiff.

Ailish McSweeney continued her great start of the year with a bronze medal in the 60m final. Her 7.38secs in the semi-final was an agonising one-hundredth of a second outside the qualifying standard for next month’s World Championships.

Other good performances were new PBs and 5th places  for Joe Warne in the 800m final and Deirdre Byrne in the 3000m final.

At the Scottish Underage Championships Niamh Whelan recorded a 60m/200m double. Her time of 24.54 for 200m was a new PB as well as being inside the qualifying standard for the World Junior Championships in July.
