Anti Doping Violation Issued on behalf of the IRFU and ISC

31 May 2013

The Irish Rugby Football Union and the Irish Sports Council jointly announce that the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel determined that player John Moroney has committed an anti-doping rule violation.

John Moroney, an amateur rugby player with Young Munster Rugby Football Club has served a ban of 3 months, as he was found to have taken cannabis. As a result of his prompt admission, the commencement of the ban was backdated to the date of his test, the 2nd February 2013.

In a sample collected immediately following a match on that date, he provided a sample which tested positive for the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolite or marker, tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis).

The Disciplinary Panel found, in a hearing held on the 9th April, that this was contrary to Article 2.1 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules and imposed the period of ineligibility of 3 months.

The hearing was held under Article 8 (Disciplinary Process) of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules and this announcement is made pursuant to Article 15 (Public Disclosure of the Rules.

Under a new policy of the Irish Sports Council the full Decision of the Disciplinary Panel is available at http://www.irishsportscouncil.ie/Anti-Doping/Testing/Sanctions/
