Historic Gold for O’Donovan, McCarthy & Ireland 

Sport Ireland extends its congratulations to Paul O’Donovan & Fintan McCarthy after they won a historic first rowing Olympic Gold for Ireland in the lightweight double sculls in Tokyo.

In a thrilling encounter, the West Cork duo fought off stiff competition from their German counterparts to claim Ireland’s second medal of the Tokyo Games and the first Gold medal since Katie Taylor’s win in London.

Chairman of Sport Ireland Kieran Mulvey was delighted for the pair, saying: “Today is a truly magnificent day for Paul & Fintan, for Irish Rowing and for Irish Sport. Ireland’s consistency in the lightweight double sculls has been evident for many years now, and this Gold is thoroughly deserved. Paul and Fintan are excellent ambassadors for both their sport and their country. On behalf of Sport Ireland, I extend our congratulations to Paul & Fintan, their families, support team and all at Rowing Ireland on what is a brilliant day for Irish Sport.”
