FAI Play It Right Safeguarding Awareness Campaign
The FAI continues to highlight the standards expected from all within the game. Ongoing efforts to support the work being done by our Child Welfare & Safeguarding Department and safeguarding officers in clubs, leagues and National Bodies. Finding ways to better communicate and promote the structures in place, to report concerns, and to follow on from feedback received from those who have lived experiences.
The ‘Play It Right’ awareness campaign is aimed at everyone involved in Irish Football, at all levels of the game, but there is a specific focus on communicating with Grassroots clubs.
Communication and support are the key principles, while also providing a modern way to assist anyone within Irish Football who may ever feel unsafe. If something goes unchallenged it becomes acceptable, if you challenge it, people become aware it is not accepted.
The FAI are setting the standards, to provide a clear message that unacceptable behaviour in Irish Football will not be tolerated and there are support structures in place to call it out. To let those who may be experiencing unacceptable behaviour know there are supports available to them and they will be listened to.

Triathlon Ireland – Tri Heroes Schools Programme
Our school’s programme is called ‘Tri Heroes.’ We want to show kids that triathlon and multisport can come in various formats and there is something for everyone.
We want to ensure the programme fit with current best practice Sport Ireland guidance on physical literacy and schools PE curriculum.
The skills and games help to promote development in line with physical literacy guidance and the programme also fits with schools programming.
The core principles of the programme are:
- Inclusion: Triathlon is for everyone! It doesn't have to look like swim, bike, run, it can be in various formats.
- Fun: The sessions are built around fun sessions and games.
- Development: Development is different for everyone, and the programme is adapted for each school and group by the coaches or teachers.
Triathlon Irelands aims for the programme:
To provide safe, fun opportunities for young people to try biking and running through inclusive games and mini events.
With future plans to increase the number of junior training hubs around the country linked to schools.
IABA 360 Degrees Project
Our new EDI programme is underpinned by our 360 Inclusion policy launched in early 2024.
The sport of boxing would be identified as a sport that targets and has a large range of ethnic backgrounds as well as various people from different socio-economic backgrounds. Boxing as an international sport is seen as a welcoming support in communities for those that arrive to Ireland from abroad allowing access to social and recreational activity.
Core Principles
One of the key principles of the IABA’s Diversity and Inclusion Policy is that IABA will strive to achieve inclusion by creating pathways to participation, through working in partnership with clubs, representative groups, disability services and in consultation with people with disabilities and their families. The IABA commits to continued action to identify and remove physical, cultural, perceived, and other barriers to people in accessing our sport and our community.
Partnerships include Sporting Pride, Activity Disability Ireland, SARI (Sport Against Racism Ireland) and in consultation with Vision Sport Ireland, which created the 360 Degrees project.[LO1]
Champion the message that there is room for everyone in the squared circle.
The toolkit includes supports for:
- Training in Diversity and Inclusion,
- Mental health/Wellbeing
- Disability Awareness training.

This year Sport Ireland Safeguarding Campaign supports the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, ‘Children First Awareness Week.’
Under Children First, all organisations and individuals that provide services or activities to children should have child safeguarding policies and procedures in place to protect children from harm and promote their welfare.
This includes having policies and procedures on child safeguarding awareness and training and the reporting of child protection concerns.
Children First legislation also requires many organisations to carry out a risk assessment and develop a Child Safeguarding Statement, which outlines how risks to children’s welfare and protection will be managed.

In response to several high-profile incidents, Sport Ireland partnered with representatives from the Irish sports sector, including referees and officials, to develop a template for a code of conduct for sport in Ireland.
This initiative aims to foster a culture of respect, integrity, and fairness within the sporting community by addressing and eliminating abuse towards referees, officials, coaches, players, and all participants involved. The newly created code of conduct template sets forth a set of guidelines and principles that promotes the behaviour and conduct expected from athletes, coaches, parents/guardians, supporters, referees/officials, and club members, regardless of the sporting environment.
While different sports organisations may have their own customised versions of a code of conduct based on their unique needs and values, this National Code of Conduct Template serves as a valuable reference for sports organisations that do not have an existing framework in place.
Sport Ireland recommends that National Governing Bodies use the code of conduct template as an opportunity to review their existing policies and procedures for handling code breaches.

Operation Safeguard
Operation Safeguard is an Erasmus+ funded project managed by Special Olympics Europe Eurasia; starting in June 2022 and finishing in June 2024. Special Olympics Ireland joined with partners Special Olympics Slovakia, Special Olympics Cyprus, Special Olympics Estonia and Special Olympics Belgium, to develop Safeguarding Policies and Procedures as well as other accompanying resources to increase awareness and strengthen practices within Special Olympics.

Athlete Voices
Our Athlete Voices group is a response to replacing the athlete representative on the board of Special Olympics Ireland. It was felt the role was not being effectively utilized and not gathering athlete voices authentically in a format that met the needs of the representative. A recruitment drive was launched to find 10 athletes, 2 from each region, with an inclusive application process allowing athletes to send their letter of motivation in any format they wished.
After the selection process the group identified training needs to support their role; working with Tara Toastmasters and Creatovation they undertook Public Speaking and innovation training. The Athlete Voices group have done much work on their role and what they can offer the board and staff of Special Olympics Ireland. A two way approach strengthens the role of the athletes; they review and feedback on agenda items which require an athletes voice as well as bringing forward any concerns or comments they might have.
